“Being able to work in the oil and gas industry in my hometown is a huge thrill for me.  I am very appreciative of the training and education that I have been able to pursue while working at Husky.  My career is challenging and rewarding, and I have wonderful opportunities to look forward to.  I strongly believe that my hard work and schooling has paid off!”

Education

Melissa has a Bachelor of Commerce (Honors) Co-operative degree from Memorial University, is a CMA (Certified Management Accountant) and is currently working on her MBA (Master of Business Administration). She says her high school math, economics, language and literature courses were most applicable to her post-secondary studies. Melissa also feels her extra-curricular involvement as treasurer on various councils helped her develop basic business skills, while playing and coaching sports for the last 20 years has helped her build the solid teamwork skills needed in the workplace. She credits her strong aptitude for math and writing with attracting her to the business world.

Lifestyle

Melissa usually works 7:30 am-5:30 pm, Monday to Friday, and occasionally evenings or weekends. Melissa’s permanent residence is just a 10-minute drive from her workplace. Most of her day as an Accounting Analyst involves working on a computer, attending meetings or taking/placing phone calls. As she works in an office, she does not face any physically demanding conditions.

Melissa’s career began with three work terms in Husky’s Accounts Payable division. After completing her undergraduate degree, she first worked as a Cost Accountant for Husky’s Drilling/Completions team, and now works as an Accounting Analyst doing monthly/quarterly reporting. Many future career opportunities exist for Melissa both in St. John’s and in Calgary, ranging from positions similar to the one she is in now, right up to management or executive positions.

Compensation and Benefits

In addition to her salary, Melissa receives Group RRSP benefits and a company savings plan from her employer. She also has the opportunity to receive individual and group performance bonuses and tuition support. Extensive training opportunities are available to Melissa, including technical training related to her current job, as well as more generic business training. Her employer has also supported her CMA and MBA programs. Melissa feels that at this point in her career in Newfoundland & Labrador, her salary in the oil and gas industry is probably double what other industries are offering.
