Education and Personal Background

Mitchell started his post-secondary education with an undergraduate degree in Kinesiology. He started his professional career as a Certified Kinesiologist, helping workers with vocational rehab. He completed a post-graduate diploma in Safety Engineering Technology, and worked in healthcare, construction, and the brewing industry before moving to oil and gas.

 

Duties and Work Environment

Mitchell works in an office and has an 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. workday. As a safety professional, Mitchell plays a key role in promoting and supporting worker safety, especially with regard to the offshore. Mitchell is involved in monitoring safety procedures and programs, and developing initiatives that help foster a safe work environment.

Why did you choose a career in oil and gas?

I choose this field because of the opportunities available. This industry is growing in our province, and I wanted to get involved.

 

What’s the best career advice you’ve been given?

Look at every job as an opportunity to develop and grow. Some jobs may not seem ideal at the time, but when you look back, there are skills you developed that allowed you to grow as a professional.

 

What’s your personal motto?

Take every opportunity to learn and develop yourself. Learning opportunities are everywhere – from formal training courses to practical, real world experiences.
