Occupation: Deckhand

Deckhands conduct routine maintenance, fire and security rounds, lookout and navigation bridge watch duties on a ship.  They repair and paint decks, operate cargo equipment, handle mooring lines, launch lifeboats and load cargo.

Program: Bridge Watch Technical Certificate

Institution: Marine Institute, St. John’s
Duration: Eight months (16 weeks in-class instruction, 3 weeks safety training, 60-day work term)

Entrance Requirements:

  • Completion of grade eight
  • A signed medical from an approved doctor certifying physical fitness

Program Description:

The Bridge Watch program includes sixteen weeks of in-class instruction, three weeks of practical marine safety training and a sixty-day work term. 

Certification:

The Government of Canada (Transport Canada) develops and enforces certification standards to ensure the safe operation of all marine vessels in Canada.  After completing the Bridge Watch Technical Certificate program students may write the Bridge Watch certification exam and receive a certificate of competency from Transport Canada.
