High School

It’s time to start thinking about your career.

The best time to start planning for your career in the oil and gas industry is while you are still in high school. There are many courses available that can help you get into the education or training program you want later. Plus, the skills you acquire from extracurricular activities can only help you when you start working in the field.

A few things you can do while you’re still in school.

The choices you make in high school can improve your chances of achieving your career dreams. Here are a few things to consider:

  • Choose courses that are most relevant to the industry. For example, most technical positions require math and science backgrounds, so taking such courses in high school will help you in your post-secondary studies.
  • Ask your Career Development 2201 teacher to contact PIHRC. Your teacher can request a copy of the PIHRC teaching resource. It contains five lesson plans designed to help you research the career options available and find the one that appeals to you the most.
  • Go to career fairs. Take the time to go and talk to people who work in the industry. Ask about their background and experience, and listen to their advice.
  • Arrange for an Industry Ambassador to speak to your class. Talk to your teachers. Ask one to contact PIHRC and we’ll help arrange a visit or webinar.
  • Participate in extracurricular activities. Team programs are great chances to develop your communication and interpersonal skills; while sports offer a wonderful opportunity to stay in good physical shape and prevent injuries on the job.
