Learn about career options for your child in Newfoundland and Labrador’s oil & gas industry.
Parents play a critical role in helping their children plan for their future. A career in oil & gas should be one to consider.
Not long after offshore oil began to flow, Newfoundland and Labrador’s oil & gas sector became the largest industrial contributor to our province’s economy. In 2003, it provided 36 percent of our GDP. Even in the recent years of low oil prices the industry has contributed, on average, more than 20 percent of our province’s GDP.
Oil & gas extraction and related industries are the top paying industries in Newfoundland and Labrador. Canada’s 2016 census data showed the average employment income for full-time, full-year workers directly employed in this sector was almost $180,000.
The provincial government’s “Advance 2030: A Plan for Growth in the Newfoundland and Labrador Oil and Gas Industry” states that our resource potential represents a significant opportunity for jobs and growth in the industry. By 2030, it envisions 7,500 people will be directly employed in “sustainable operations phase” industry jobs. This is a considerable increase from the approximately 5,200 employed in construction and operations of the province’s four offshore projects in December 2017.
This means there are significant future employment opportunities for students in Newfoundland and Labrador who pursue post-secondary education in programs which are in-demand by the oil & gas sector.
