Bryce has a Bachelor of Science degree in Earth Science from Memorial University. He says his involvement as a minor hockey referee, in the Alexander Murray Geology Club (university student organization) and in the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists (APEGN) student chapter helped him develop important teamwork and leadership skills. His involvement in the Scouting movement and participation in tennis, orienteering, water polo, sailing and backpacking also helped him build valuable career skills.

Bryce adds that his natural fascination with finding and developing natural resources, as well as his enjoyment of the outdoors and traveling, drew him towards his current career. He says that mathematics, sciences, English and all advanced placement courses in high school were invaluable to his university success.


Bryce normally works from 8 am-5 pm daily and is on call during nights/weekends for work-related emergencies or issues requiring his oversight. His permanent residence is close to his place of work (5 minute drive) and he also commutes daily to downtown St. John’s offices to meet with clients (15 minute drive).

Bryce’s job requires extensive travel. He has traveled throughout North America, Central America, Europe, Middle East and North Africa. He has also been assigned to the southern US states (Louisiana and Texas), North Africa (Libya), and currently St. John’s. Prior to starting with Schlumberger he spent a year working with another oilfield engineering company in Alberta and spent several summers working during university in the Northwest Territories and western Newfoundland. “Traveling has been the most rewarding aspect of my career with Schlumberger.”

His workday involves managing a team of engineers and technicians to deliver engineering solutions to clients. This includes day to day management of personnel, finances, logistics, QHSE (Quality, Health, Safety, Environment) and asset management. Schlumberger is ISO 140002 certified workplace, meaning that it meets strict environmental and safety standards.

As a condition of employment, all employees are required to wear personal protective equipment at all times in designated areas of the workplace. Corporate policies and standards reflect this dedication towards a hazard free workplace.

Bryce began working as a Field Engineer with Schlumberger following graduation in 1999. He has since been promoted to: General Field Engineer; Technical Engineer at Shell’s head office in New Orleans, USA; Field Service Manager in Libya; and then Field Service Manager for Schlumberger in Eastern Canada, based in Newfoundland & Labrador. Bryce’s future career possibilities include Area Business Manager, Area Marketing Manager, Country Manager, Vice President or Segment President.

Compensation and Benefits

Salaries for Bryce’s occupation range from $130,000-150,000 annually, while career compensation can range from $65,000-250,000. Bryce’s employer also provides RRSP matching, insurance (health, dental and life), pension, profit sharing, discounted stock, as well as performance bonuses, field bonuses, stock options and stock grants. Schlumberger also provides country coefficients applied to base salary based on security risks, location isolation and cultural challenges that may exist in a particular assignment. Field bonuses (in the form of a daily rate) are also applied when working on the rig. In addition, his employer provides extensive technical development training, professional and career development courses and funding for distance-based education courses.

Bryce estimates his salary is 50-100% higher than similar positions in other industries and 50-100% higher than salaries in non oil and gas careers with similar amounts of training.
