Jonathon has a Bachelor of Science (Honours) degree with a Major in Economics and Minor in Statistics, a Master of Arts degree in Economics and a Masters of Business Administration (MBA) degree, all from Memorial University. Jonathon says his high school courses in Math and English were most applicable to his post-secondary studies, as most of the business world emphasizes strong communication skills.
Jonathon credits his youth participation in sports with teaching him leadership skills and the ability to communicate with and motivate people. He was also a member of Boys Scouts of Canada as a child, where leadership skills are taught and practiced. Jonathon says he was drawn to his career because he wanted to stay in Newfoundland & Labrador and thought that the business side of the oil and gas industry might be a promising one for him. He says good social and speaking skills, as well as self-confidence and portraying a positive image, are assets for this type of work.
Jonathon typically works 8:30 am-5:00 pm with a half hour for lunch (this is a compressed work schedule which gives him an extra day off per month). He lives and works in downtown St. John’s, and sometimes travels for work. He has been to Halifax, Ottawa, and various shipyards and construction/fabrication sites in Canada and many other parts of Newfoundland & Labrador.
The mandate of Jonathon’s department at the C-NLOPB covers a broad range of duties from monitoring contracts, research and development/education and training expenditures, diversity, first consideration for employment for Newfoundland & Labrador residents and reporting to both the provincial and federal governments. Most of Jonathon’s specific duties are office-based and consist of preparing and giving presentations, writing letters to governments and operators on behalf of his department, as well as the Board’s chairman and vice chairman. Jonathon also attends many business meetings with industry companies and governments and maintains databases and filing systems for information related to his department’s mandate.
This position is Jonathon’s first permanent job since leaving university. He worked with the provincial government for a summer and with an economic/social consulting firm for a six-month internship prior to beginning his current position. He says his work experience and educational background were huge assets in acquiring his current job. Jonathon’s current department is relatively small and there are only two positions more senior than his (Senior Benefits Advisor and Department Manager). However, there are many future career opportunities available to him with oil and gas operators and governments in similar roles.
Compensation and Benefits
In addition to his salary Jonathon receives a full benefits package from his employer. His employer also provides a wide variety of training and allocates a training budget to each employee. The C-NLOPB recently paid for Jonathon’s MBA which he completed part-time while working full-time at the Board. He has also attended other training courses for writing skills and project economics.
