Education and Personal Background 

Following high school, Ian completed a three-year program in Marine Engineering Systems Design. This prepared him for designing the types of drawings and models used in construction projects. In addition to his post-secondary diploma, Ian has completed introductory training in Lean Manufacturing, which focuses on minimizing wastage. 

Duties and Work Environment 

Ian’s work week runs Monday to Friday, with each day starting at 8:00 a.m.  As a piping designer, Ian prepares designs and models that are used to guide the work of construction and installation crews.

Ian’s 2D drawings and 3D computer models outline where piping systems should be installed, how they should be supported, and how they can be modified when required. Ian’s work also involves identifying stages of work to be completed, and listing the materials to be ordered.

Questions and Answers

What inspires you most at work? 

I’m inspired by doing work that others rely on to guide them in their tasks. It means I have to deliver the best product possible. 

What has surprised you about working in oil and gas? 

I have always been amazed at the level of engineering involved in oil and gas projects, and impressed at the emphasis on safety. Everything has to be well-planned and thought out, and safety is always at the forefront. 

What is the best career advice you’ve received? 

Always make your supervisor/manager look good. And never say you can’t do something.
